AFT-West Virginia represents all teachers and school service personnel in public schools. We represent the interests of teachers, counselors, librarians, custodians, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, nurses, classroom aides, clerical employees, and the other men and women who work so hard to make our schools work. We also represent employees in universities, colleges and community and junior colleges. AFT-West Virginia does not represent administrators.
AFT-WV represents 17,000 members statewide and is affiliated with the both the National AFT which represents 1.5 million members as well as the AFL-CIO that represents over 12 million members.
It has been said that “All politics are local”. This is especially true in Clay County where we have the potential to change the landscape but only if we speak with one strong voice. By becoming a chartered local within the AFT in Clay County, we will be one step closer to making sure that our concerns are heard and our needs addressed.
So what does it specifically mean for you? More local control for you and our members! You can decide what issues we will address. You can set the priorities for the union in Clay County. You elect officers for the union in Clay county to represent you.
Increased Political Action at the County-level! You decide if we will endorse candidates for county (including BOE) offices, You decide if we will work on excess levy and bond elections. You can attend AFL-CIO labor council meetings as a voting delegate. You have a local organization that watches your back and will address violations of WV School Law by the county administration. More representation at AFT-WV state and national meetings!
You are eligible to attend AFT-WV legislative meetings and state convention as a voting delegate. You can help set direction for AFT-WV and elect officers. You are eligible to attend AFT national meetings and conventions.
More professional development! You can attend state workshops including AFT-WV’s professional development conference. You can attend AFT-WV summer school and receive graduate credits at a discounted rate. You can attend AFT national workshops on issues impacting your profession.
