The time to make friends is before we need them. Jonathan, the eldest son of Saul, the first king of Israel, is best remembered as the true best friend of David.
Exemplified all that is in a true friendship warmth of affection unselfishness, helpfulness, and loyalty. Jonathan’s love and friendship for David began the day the two first met after the slaying of Goliath, 1 Samuel 18: 1-4. And it remained steadfast despite king Saul suggestions that David would someday by King instead of Saul. When Jonathan first realized his father’s animosity toward David he interceded for his true friend, 1 Samuel 119: 1-8 and more than once he risked his life for David, Jonathan was a true friend to David. Faithful are the wounds of a friend but the kisses of enemy deceitful. Proverbs 27:6. A man that hath friends must show himself friendly and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother. Proverbs 18:24.
We need friends to help us make it through it. The time to make friends is before we need them. A person who has a thousand friends is one whom we can tell everything and who will never betray us. A true friend will not say anything that will injure us. We must ask God every day to help us to treat people equally. When we hear a group of church members finding fault with other believers we may wonder what they say about us when we’re not present. John 16:33 Jesus said “In this life, you shall have tribulation but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” Wouldn’t it be nice to have a friend who is always with you no matter what you are going through or need help with. Remember, that old song ‘What a Friend We Have in Jesus, all our sins and grief’s to bear, what a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer.’ A true friend is one we can be with and talk to without the fear of being misunderstood.
