Sonjie Naomi Brown Childers, born September 13, 1940, to the late Carl H. and Helen Taylor Childers, was called to her heavenly home on February 17, 2024, where she was undoubtedly met with open arms by her one true eternal love Paul H. Brown.
Sonjie had a very full life dash. She whole heartedly loved her family and was very active in the community as a lifetime member of the VFW Post 4419 Auxiliary, beloved member of the Woman’s Club of Gassaway, Clay Lions Club, regularly attended Ida Missionary Baptist Church, supported every sporting event of her grand and great-grandchildren including being known as the ‘Dance Team Grandma,’ and traveled around the state to many gospels sings.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Susie Pierson, Sandra Sparks, Jim Childers, and Dallas Childers; grandson, Paul Allen Brown Jr.; and great-grandchildren, Olivia Cliver and Xyler Brown. Also, lifelong best friend, Pearl Legg.
Sonjie is survived by her sisters Sharon and Lynn Young, Rebecca and Tim Abbott, SnowFern and Carlos Doss, and Sharlene and Eddie Glenn; children Darlene and Mike Cliver, Wanda and Tim White, and Paula and CK Meadows; grandchildren Alex and Heather Brown, Jamie and Jaime Brown, Heath Cliver, Joey and Donna Brown, Miriam ‘Blondie’ Cliver and Brandon Prange, Kenton III ‘Precious’ and Toni Meadows, Kathryn Moore, and Kristen ‘Pretty Girl’ and Cody Hoover; great-grandchildren Holly Brady, Christopher Brady, AJ Brown, Herbie Jack Cliver, Brooke Cliver, Bailey Brown, Xavier Brown, Kenton Meadows IV, Tucker Cliver, Sadie Cliver, Elijah Meadows, Kade Cliver, Marlowe Moore, Jacob Meadows, Isabella Hoover, Etta Cliver, Briley Hoover, Jacob and Cassie Brown, Joshua and Yasmin Brown, and Jeremiah Brown; and great-great-grandchildren Easton, Bayley, and Raylynn.
The family would like to thank Dr. ‘Teddy Bear’ Strickland and his special staff, as well as the staff at Montgomery General Hospital, including her ‘favorite’ Nurse Sharon, for the special care given to Sonjie.
A visitation was held on Tuesday, February 20, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Pennington’s Funeral Home in Gauley Bridge. Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, February 21, beginning at 11 a.m. with graveside services following at Kanawha Memorial Gardens.
