Doris Jene Sumler Wood, 91, died peacefully on June 21, 2020 in her apartment at ManorCare in Palm Harbor, Florida.
She is survived by her sister Edith Wilson of St. Petersburg; her daughters; Barbara Lowe (Larry) of Wilsonville, Alabama; Jenifer Huntley (Bruce) of Beverly Hills, Florida; Linda Sumler McDaniel of Odessa, Florida; her sons; Randy Sumler (Donna) of Tampa, Florida; David Sumler (David) of Palm Harbor, Florida; Robert Sumler of Land O’Lakes, Florida and Greg Sumler of Tampa, Florida; six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Wood; parents, Robert and Hazel Fitzwater; sister, Helen; brothers, Robert and Harold; and granddaughter Cindy Howerton
Doris was born in Clay, West Virginia and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio where she graduated from Withrow High School. She went on to attend Stetson University in Deland, Florida where she met her first husband, Albert Sumler.
She worked primarily as a retail clerk and manager at 7-11 stores in the Tampa Bay area while raising her seven children in Riverview, Florida.
She retired from 7-11 in 1994 and continued to live in a rural area of Land O’Lakes, Florida next door to her sister, Helen and mother, Hazel. In retirement, Doris enjoyed gardening, landscape oil painting and playing the piano. She also was a beekeeper and enjoyed sharing the honey harvest with family and friends. She hosted many large family gatherings and an annual Thanksgiving dinner and bonfire.
A memorial service will be held at Loyless Funeral home in Land O’Lakes, Florida on Saturday, August 1, at 1:00 PM for visitation with a service at 2:00 PM.
