Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council has partnered once again with the National Boy Scout organization to offer several 2016 summer events at the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in Fayette County, WV. The first one is a week-long opportunity called the “West Virginia Wild, Wonderful High Adventure” on June 5-11. It includes the activities in the Summit Center area, plus those in the Adventure Zone area (another super high adventure area on the Summit hilltop area). Applicants apply as individuals and the girls must be 13 years old and up, as well as, be in excellent physical condition to attend. This experience also includes service learning, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), leadership development and team building activities. A principal letter is available for consideration of an excused absence for an individual attending this educational opportunity. The fee is $1,050 per participant, including such things as Summit admission, program supplies, tents, cots and food etc. Transportation support is provided to/from Yeager Airport for out-of-council participants. Scholarship funding is also available for this experience. The deadline to apply is May 6th.
Later in the same week, from June 8-11, a Girl Scout Mountaineer Experience is being offered. It is open to all girls currently in grades 4-12 during the 2015-16 school year. Participants will have the chance to enjoy adventure activities on the land, water and in the air at the Summit Center. The cost is $230 per girl and adult. Girl Scout troops, small groups, or individual girls may sign up by the May 6th deadline.
A Girl Scout Summit Family Day has also been set up for Saturday, July 30th from 9:30 am – 4:30 pm in the Summit Center section of the facility. There are some height and weight limitations for some activities. For example, the zip line is only open to those who are at least 75 lbs. and no more than 250 lbs. Participants should be aware that there is considerable walking between the activity stations. The fee is $55/participant. This would be a chance to scope out the place in anticipation of the upcoming 2017 Girl Scout Jamboree, June 28-July 2.
Not familiar with what the Summit is? It is the new site of the Boy Scout Jamboree that adjoins the New River Gorge National Forest, not far from Beckley or Charleston, WV. High adventure amenities are abundant at this camp—zip lining, challenge courses, rock climbing, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, BMX bike riding and so much more.
These events are not only for Black Diamond Council girls, but for other Girl Scouts across the nation, as well. If a girl or an adult is not currently a member, they may join and participate for an additional $15.
