Clay, WV – Philip N. Pennington, 79 of Clay, formerly of Hurricane, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at CAMC Teays Valley Hospital after a brief illness.
Born on July 18, 1936, in Charleston, he was the son of the late Jack and Martha (Stanley) Pennington, of Hurricane.
Phil was a retired school teacher, with 29 years of experience, from Kanawha County Board of Education. He served in the ROTC at West Virginia State College, and later became a captain in the United States Army.
He was preceded in death by his son Phillip Pennington. Also preceding him were his siblings, Mavis (Peggy) Pennington, Stan Pennington, Penny Eldred, June Mosteller, Elizabeth Hazel.
Phil is survived by his loving wife, Wanda (Salisbury) Pennington of Clay; son, Charles H. and wife Denise Pennington, of New Market, AL; daughter, Ann and husband David Cooper of Jacksonville, FL; and two grandsons Matthew Tabler of Jacksonville, FL and Garrett Pennington of New Market, AL.
Phil was a lifelong active Republican who is credited with countless campaign successes for both Democrats and Republicans in and around Hurricane, where he and his wife were active members in the Republican Club. He believed in electing the best person for the job who would make the community and state a better place to live.
He did not hesitate to share his love of mathematics both in the classroom, and with his nieces and nephews. He enjoyed studying history, and loved the outdoors, especially gardening.
Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at Wilson-Shamblin-Smith Funeral Home in Clay, with Minister Dean Rogers officiating, burial was in the Salisbury-Koch Cemetery, Clay, WV.
The family would like to thank a special friend, Ruth Ilar, of Hurricane, for all that she has done for them during this difficult time, as well as the nurses at CAMC Teays Valley ICU who showed our family the very best of care.
