Clay County Board of Education met at Big Otter Elementary School on Thursday, December 17, 2015. The board approved the employment of a math teacher at Clay Middle School in Vincent Young’s former substitute position. Also, the employment of a kindergarten teacher at Clay Elementary School has been approved for the remainder of the
year, Dylan Vaughan’s former position. Next, Big Otter Elementary Local School Improvement Council has requested for new ceiling fans in the library. They have found a grand for half of the cost, but want the Board to cover the remaining amount. The board approved the employment of a new head football coach at CHS and has also approved the purchase or lease of the auxiliary vehicle for transportation. Big Otter Elementary has achieved a remarkable ranking, also breaking their school records, in the state of West Virginia according to standardized state assessments. Big Otter Elementary is ranked 16 out of 405 schools in West Virginia. Tonight, the 4th grade students were recognized for their remarkable scorings in math, reading/language arts, and science. These students either scored a 4 or distinguished which is the highest score one could get. The students also received a certificate and a $5 McDonald’s gift card for their hard work. The Big Otter Elementary choir also closed the evening with singing Silent Night; they also used American Sign Language for these hits, Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer, and Frosty the Snowman.
