On the 16th of May, 2015 Mrs. Roxie I. Schoolcraft of Procious WV celebrated her 90th birthday with a surprise party at Spread Park. Born May 16th 1925, she has gone 90 years without a party. She was told by her oldest daughter Mrs. Ruby Cummings of Baltimore Maryland that she was going fishing, as a ruse to get her to the park. Not one to appreciate crowds, when she saw that there was 79 people gathered in the park she said, “why are all these people here, I am not getting out of the car”. Ruby’s return was “they are all here for you, Mom, Happy Birthday”. At that point her smile became fixed for the rest of the day and it turned in to a day she will never forget. She was wished a happy birthday from her family and friends coming from Texas, Maryland, Ohio, Tennessee, Florida and of course, West Virginia.
The rest of the day was spent on family chatter, great food and the traditional birthday cake. Wait, not quite so traditional, the cake was adorned with a picture of her favorite entertainer, Elvis Presley. She would not allow his face to be cut in to pieces so her other daughter Mrs. Betty Perdue of The Villages, Florida cut around him and made that portion suitable for freezing. In the mood of things, Mrs. Kay (Cummings) Kagsmarski provided balloons and apples that were dipped in Caramel then chocolate then decorated as gifts.
Mr. Eddie Sloan brought dozens of star shaped cookies decorated with Elvis trivia and happy 90th.
It was a magical day for Roxie and food, music and love filled the day. Roxie’s statement was, “this was the best day of my life, I enjoyed every moment and will never forget it”. I hesitate to not mention everyone’s name who played a part. So for brevity sake I’ll say that it took the entire family and friends to make this happen and it was done with love for Roxie.
