A telephone call from Delegate Dave Walker, a meeting with the board and the kindness and good nature of people have brought another $2500 donation to the Christian Service Center. Kenneth Perdue, President of AFL-CIO traveled to Lizemores on Tuesday to personally deliver a check to Secretary/Treasurer Lora Griffin of the Christian Service Center in response to the break in and theft last month. “There is a need in all communities and that need is increasing. It is a tragedy that all of the food was taken out of here and we wanted to help.” said Perdue. The AFL-CIO partners with local organizations including United Food Operations to help people in times of emergencies, such as purchasing and donating a tractor trailer load of water to residents in Danville-Madison during the water crisis this past year.
Volunteers Betty McCune, Charlotte Taylor and Ed Baker were on hand at the center during Tuesday’s visit and expressed their appreciation to everyone who has helped out. “I’ve been a volunteer here for about fourteen years,” said Taylor. “This is the first time we’ve had anything like this happen and so many people have given so much to help us.” Although donations continue to pour into the center and the food pantry is quickly filling up, any contributions are still greatly appreciated.
