Angels Joe Mazzella
A person once wrote me an e-mail and asked me if I believed in angels. I wrote her back and said: “Absolutely! Without angels I would have never survived my childhood.” I can still remember the time I fell out of a tree I was climbing and somehow landed on a huge pile of fall leaves instead of the rocks and tree roots that would have broken my back. I also remember the time I fell off the swinging bridge by our house and ruptured my groin but somehow missed damaging the leg artery that would have caused me to bleed to death. I especially remember wrecking my bicycle on a gravel road and busting my head open. Somehow someone unseen kept urging me to walk back home to my Mom before I passed out. Finally I reached her and was rushed to the hospital in time.
Those, of course, were just the times I got hurt. For every one of them there were 100 near misses. I remember braking my bike right before a car pulled out in front of me, steering my fast-moving sled away from hitting a tree at the last second, waking up hearing my Nana scream just as a fire was starting that burned down our house but from which we all escaped with our lives. There is no way I would have survived at all if there weren’t some unseen helpers from Heaven aiding me. There is no way I would be alive without a million different miracles.
Those too were just the times angels saved my life. They also guided me, protected me, watched over me, and loved me every day of my life. And each time I open my heart I can feel their love, their kindness, and their joy. I have no doubt at all that angels exist.
Angels are all around us. We can ignore them and deny them. But they are still there. Why not thank God for them instead? Why not return their love and accept their protection and guidance? Why not live your life with such Love and kindness that you make your angels smile?
