Charleston, WV – Iris Verna Reed Shimer, 79, of Charleston passed away at Hubbard Hospice House August 14, 2014. She was born September 17, 1934 to the late Harmon and Salina Hanshaw.
Iris was very talented and could do anything she put her mind too. During her years as a young adult she was employed as a teacher’s aid for Clay County Schools. Later in life Iris was a full time mom and that was the job she enjoyed most of all because she loved her family more than anything. She was an excellent amateur photographer and also enjoyed crochet, sewing, ceramics and plastic canvas. She loved making things for her friends and family and her memory will live on through the many items she crafted for others.
In addition to her parents Iris was preceded in death by her sisters, Ollie Rhodes, Rebecca Kyle, Lenna Sumner, Garnie Hamrick, Chattie Stickel, Beulah Woods; brothers, Patrick Hanshaw and William Hanshaw.
She is survived by her son Wadsworth “Buck” Reed (Lisa) of New Castle, DE; daughters, Rena Hubbard (Johnny) of Clay WV, Caramae Sheldon (Don) of Sewell, NJ, Clorinda Reed (Marsha) of Charleston, WV; brothers, Gerald “Jake” Hanshaw, and Jack Hanshaw. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
A memorial service honoring Iris’s life was held 5:30pm Friday, August 22, 2014 at Bartlett Burdette Cox Funeral Home with Rev. Rick Perrine officiating. Visitation was held two hours prior to the memorial service.
In lieu of flowers the family suggested memorial donation be made in Iris’s honor to Kanawha Valley Senior Services Adult Day Program 2428 Kanawha Blvd East Charleston, WV 25311 or Hubbard Hospice House, 1606 Kanawha Blvd, Charleston, WV 25387
Iris’s family would like to give special thanks to Kanawha Valley Senior Services Adult Day Program. KVSS allowed the Reed family to keep their mother in her home longer.
