Teacher Injured in Fall from 20-Foot Precipice
Miss Tessie Bailes, librarian-English teacher in Widen High School, suffered a fractured back and broken leg in a fall over a 20 feet cliff near her home in Enoch, on Wednesday night, February 4, 1959.
Miss Bailes, who lives here at the Annex Building during the school week, was making one of her frequent visits with her parents who have been ill.
She was taking a short cut through the woods to a neighbor’s to seek a ride back to Widen in time for school Thursday morning when the candle she was carrying blew out, she lost her footing and slid over the embankment.
Miss Bailes was able to arouse Mr. Morgan McGraw her neighbor who took her to the Widen hospital where a litter was prepared and she was carried to his house.
The ambulance took her to the Charleston Hospital where she underwent treatment. As soon as the broken bones in the leg mend suitably she will be placed in a cast for several months to heal her back.
Miss Bailes has been a teacher in the Widen Schools for 22 years. She has been librarian-English teacher in the high school since 1940.
Miss Bailes is advisor of National Honor Society and secretary of PTA and has been active in school functions during her teaching career.
She will be sorely missed by faculty and students who send her the best wishes for a speedy recovery.
