Mrs. D. F. McMillion, Jr Wins Sewing Contest

Wearing a very pretty short length red dinner dress of accelade crystal satin, with matching accessories, Mrs. D. F. McMillion, Jr., was judged as the local winner of the Vogue Sewing Contest. This contest is sponsored by the Vogue Pattern Service in conjunction with the West Virginia Federation of Woman’s Clubs.

Members of the Widen Woman’s Club entering the contest were Mrs. D. F. McMillion and Miss Leola Mick.

Miss Mick modeled a lovely two piece, teal blue wool suit with boxy jacket, which she had made. With the suit she was wearing a small black fabric hat that trimmed with matching fabric.

Judging was done by local club members and the winning garment of Capital District in a judging held in Charleston, West Va., on Saturday, February 14, 1959. District winners will compete for the state championship at a later date and the state winner will be announced at the Annual Convention of the State Federation at White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., in March.

Both Mrs. McMillion and Miss Mick are to be commended for their splendid work in this project and it gives the Widen Woman’s Club extra points toward becoming an Honor Club for the current club year. It is hoped that there will be more entries next year.

Mr. E. D. Currence Heads Lumber Mfg. Association Group

At a recent meeting of the Appalachian Hardwood Lumbermen’s Association in Cincinnati, Ohio, E. D. Currence, superintendent of Elk River Coal and Lumber Company’s lumber manufacturing plant at Swandale, W. Va., was named president of the group.

Mr. Currence, who has been superintendent at Swandale for the past 20 years, was elected to head the national organization for a term of one year. He was vice-president last year.

Besides being president of the giant lumber association and superintendent of the big lumber operation of Elk River Coal and Lumber Company, Mr. Currence takes an active part in local civic and community affairs.

Widen High School Association is one of a group of seven that make up the National Lumber Manufacturers’ Association, and comprises several states including West Virginia.

The Appalachian Hardwood Lumberman’s Association is interested chiefly in the manufacture and sale of lumber, but is also interested in the conservation and scientific cutting of trees and lumber.

Mr. Currence has announced that there will be a meeting of his group July 27 and 28, at the Greenbrier Hotel, White Sulphur Springs.

Mrs. Bessie Dunlap Retires From YMCA

Mrs. Bessie Dunlap of Nicholas Street has retired from her position as manager of the YMCA fountain after 19 years with the Elk River Coal and Lumber Company. She had held that position since the old Grille burned in 1946. Prior to that time, she served in various capacities in the Widen Store and Grille.

Mrs. Dunlap is the only remaining charter member of the Widen Woman’s Club and is still very active in club work. She has raised a large family in Widen, and several of her children are graduates of Widen High School.

Always a very competent and loyal employee, Mrs. Dunlap will be missed by her many friends who stopped daily by the “Y” Counter to chat with her. We wish her every happiness in her retirement years!
