Christi Boggs discusses soil testing

The WVU Braxton/Clay Master Gardeners recently gathered on Mar. 21 at the WVU Extension office in Clay for the annual Garden Life Workshop. This workshop was presented as spring time is upon us and we are all ready to think about gardening and outdoor activities. There was a crowd of approximately 40 participants. At this years’ workshop various master gardeners chose interesting and valuable topics to speak about.

The first speaker was Master Gardener, Vicki Pierson. Mrs. Pierson presented the crowd information on houseplants; repotting, watering/overwatering, growth and other helpful suggestions. Master Gardener, Heather Williamson wowed the crowd with her presentation on wild edibles/foraging. She covered topics from the edible blue violet to our prized morel mushrooms. She also prepared an informative handout to take home. Master Gardeners Marian Agostino and Christi Boggs presented information and handout material on soil testing and fertilizing. Mrs. Agostino had several examples of fertilizers for participates to see along with an interesting display with valuable information on fertilizing and understanding their proper uses.

The last presenter was Master Gardener Suzie Legg. Mrs. Legg prepared a display with DIY tips and tricks for gardeners. Her display included recipes for deer repellent and information on properly feeding our hummingbirds, who are one of our best pollinators. Good job, everyone.

The group then presented workshops; proper houseplant potting with Vicki Pierson, flower pressing with Aine Slabaugh, bow making with Debbie Friend, and spice blending with Heather Williamson. These workshops were enjoyed by several participants. The workshops were presented on site with a small fee and participants were able to take their finished products home.

The Master Gardeners donated various items for a raffle basket. This basket ran over with gardening items, homemade quilted items and several other outdoor display items. The winner of this year’s raffle was Jim Huffman. Mr. Huffman was very excited about his winnings. Congratulations to Jim!

Also at the event were several donated items for a silent auction and yummy bake sale items. There was also a seed swap. Several pollinator plant seeds were available and participants brought seeds as well. Swapping and discussing was a big hit for many. As the event came to a close, evaluation forms were given out. These evaluations are used to improve and/or offer requested topics. As the evaluations were received a choice of WV tomato seeds (donated by the Clay Extension Office) were available.

The Master Gardeners thank everyone that donated, including fellow Master Gardeners. These events happen with the generosity of the gardeners and local business and their generous donations. WVU Braxton/Clay Master Gardeners involve themselves with various community service projects. The group appreciates your support. If you are interested in joining, contact your local extension office for additional information. Play in the soil and you will be rewarded.
