Low-income veterans in the area who are struggling with finding stability in their life now have another avenue for help. Volunteers of America, through the Supportive Services for Veteran Families Program, is a US Department of Veterans affairs funded agency that works to assist veterans in maintaining or finding permanent housing. Any veteran, other than one who received a dishonorable discharge, can be assisted through this program.
The Volunteers of America serves veterans in Clay, Summers, Fayette, McDowell, Wyoming, Nicholas, Raleigh and Mercer counties. On the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month between the hours of 10:00 am and 12:00 pm, one of three representatives is available in the commissioners’ room of the Clay Courthouse to assist veterans in need. Don Carlson, Heather Bingley and Mysty Underwood are educated and knowledgeable about the services offered and are willing to assist veterans in need with a variety of services. 2015 is the goal year to eliminate the issue of homeless veterans and there is help in place to make this happen.
