Clay County High School students at the CAMC Healthcare Career Showcase.

Most students preparing for college, or the workforce only think of doctors and nurses when thinking about hospital career opportunities. There are so many people working in other settings in health care such as clerical, professional, technical and support areas.

That’s why Charleston Area Medical Center invited over 35 high schools and more than 1,500 students to its ninth annual Healthcare Career Showcase. Representatives from more than 55 CAMC departments talked to students about career opportunities in a hospital setting.

The Health Care Career Showcase was held Oct. 29 at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center exposing students to the vast career opportunities in a hospital.

Students received a “road map” explaining everything needed to work in a particular field including education, minimum requirements, licensure and certification and what schools offer the classes and programs needed for each job. They also visited the student opportunities booth to learn about tuition assistance programs that can help with college funding.

Several West Virginia colleges and universities offering the academic programs needed for many of those jobs handed out information.
