The CCMS basketball squads, both the boys and the girls, played Webster this past week in their first game since the unexpected winter break. The Lady Mustangs were at home, and the game was full of action without very many points being scored in the first half as a fan could tell the cinder blocks weren’t shaken off yet. There were quite a few elbows and wrestling matches for the ball, but the winter ice didn’t thaw until the second half. The first and second period score looked more like a baseball score until the Lady Mustangs took off the gloves in the second half and started racking up points. However, Webster girls also kicked it in gear and the game became a pre Christmas break run for the net. The Lady Mustang defense is second to none when it comes to steals and rebounds. Once they get lined out, you better take your dribbling to the next level or they will steal it.
When the wounds were bandaged, it was the Lady Mustangs over Webster by the score of 38-22. Knocking the net off the hoop was Marissa Atha with eight points. Unless the weather intervenes, the Lady Mustangs will have a three game home stretch starting Tuesday night with South Harrison and Thursday night with Braxton.
The Mustang boys were on the road to Webster and, like the Lady Mustangs, the game was slow to start. With not many practices under their belts since Christmas break, it was hard to get their B-ball swag back. The JV got the evening started with a win, beating Webster 29-27. Then it was Varsity’s turn and they came out firing on all cylinders, but Webster had bigger engines. The Mustangs put up an air show and was dribble for dribble in the first period with Webster, taking a slight lead at 13-11. In the second period, both teams fell short on the board as the shots started hitting the rim. It went downhill from there for the Mustangs as Webster was weighting the board. In the end it was Webster over the Mustangs 30-42. Top shot for the Mustangs was Collin Elliot with 12 points. The boys will be in action this week on the road Tuesday night at South Harrison and Wednesday night against Ravenswood. Go Mustangs.
