Lawmakers and Community Invited to Honor Lives Touched by Cancer

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) invites the community to join a heartfelt event honoring the countless lives touched by cancer during our Lights of Hope display at the Capitol building courtyard. On Monday, August 26, Lights of Hope bags will be displayed to remember those who have faced cancer, whether as survivors, fighters, or in memoriam.

The toll of tobacco on West Virginia is far too significant, so 430 Lights of Hope bags will be displayed representing the 4,300 West Virginians adults who die each year from smoking-related cancers. Along with the bags, smaller versions of billboards calling on lawmakers to increase funding for tobacco prevention that can be seen around the state will be displayed.

When: Monday, August 26, 2024, 5:00-7:00 p.m.

Where: Capitol Courtyard, West Virginia State Capitol

Admission: Free and open to the public

This special evening will provide an opportunity for reflection, support, and unity as we illuminate the night with personalized Lights of Hope bags. Each Lights of Hope symbolizes the strength, hope, and memories of those touched by cancer. Attendees are encouraged to donate and decorate a Lights of Hope bag with names, messages or artwork to honor their loved ones.

Lights of Hope is ACS CAN’s signature fundraising event, dedicated to honoring those who have been touched by cancer and remembering those we’ve lost through the decoration and display of a Lights of Hope bag in their honor or memory. Funds raised through Lights of Hope help fuel our work to make cancer a top priority for public officials and candidates at the federal, state, and local levels.

About ACS CAN:

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) makes cancer a top priority for policymakers at every level of government. ACS CAN empowers volunteers across the country to make their voices heard to influence evidence-based public policy change that improves the lives of people with cancer and their families. We believe everyone should have a fair and just opportunity to prevent, find, treat, and survive cancer. Since 2001, as the American Cancer Society’s nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate, ACS CAN has successfully advocated for billions of dollars in cancer research funding, expanded access to quality affordable health care, and advanced proven tobacco control measures. We’re more determined than ever to stand together with our volunteers to end cancer as we know it, for everyone. Join the fight by visiting www.fightcancer.org.
