The CCHS and CCMS cross country teams traveled to Beckley, West Virginia this past Saturday to compete in the first meet of the season, the Beckley Invitational held by Woodrow Wilson High School. This meet was a competitive one with high caliber athletes from over twenty teams in each contest.
For the high school boys’ team, junior Sawyer Dobbins medaled, placing 11th in a field of 134 runners from twenty-six teams. Teammates Kane Nida, Trent Hinkle, Patrick Boggs and Lukas Vance also ran competitive races. For the high school girls, freshman Cheyanne Taylor was the top finisher for CCHS. She was followed by strong efforts from Olivia Witt and Jaylyn Holcomb.
In the middle school girls’ race, sixth grader Marissa Atha earned a medal impressively placing 9th out of 123 runners from twenty-two teams. She was followed by McKinley Mahan, Isabella Pauley, Layla Stewart, and Tara Conley. For the boys, Isiah Woods was the highest finishing CCMS athlete. Jackson Stricker, Malachi Evans and Jacob McCallister also met the challenge of this demanding course. Coaches Ron Starcher and Matt Stricker have high expectations for the teams this season.
There are multiple meets on the schedule, including two home meets in Clay. The Buffalo Creek Invitational is scheduled on September 9th and the Elk River Trail Invitational is on October 5th. Finally, the High School LKC Conference Meet will be held at the Elk River Trail on October 12th. Get out and support these athletes!
