The monthly meeting of the Clay County Landmarks Commission and Historical Society was held at the Clay County Library on Aug. 4, 2022, at 6 p.m.  This meeting was attended by Janet Koch, Jannette Douglas, Jerry Stover, Jeanine Samples, Carol Hutchinson, Oscar Hutchinson, and Katelin Hall.

President Jerry Stover, called the meeting to order.  The minutes were read.  A motion and second to approve as read.  Motion carried. The Treasurer’s report was not given, due to the illness of our Treasurer, Sandy Claybrook.

Old Business:

Karen Burdette has printed at least three copies of the Cemetery Book and will continue printing more.  The key issue has been resolved.

New Business:

There was a suggestion to downgrade our Post Office Box.  This already has been accomplished.

We discussed the following:

  1. Clayborn Pierson’s family visited with Jerry Stover.  They are interested in buying a Clayborn Pierson book.  They also wanted to know if the History Books are for sale.
  2. David Stark is interested in having his ashes buried in Clay County in a Cemetery that is along a river bank.  He fell in love with a Clay County during a visit. Sandy Claybrook will try to help with his request.
  3. We need to decide where to put our sign, once the large pine trees in front of the Old Clay County Courthouse have been cut down.
  4. Katelin Hall is working on getting us grants to tear down dilapidated buildings, plus up-grade our infrastructure.  She needs to know who has the deed to the Old Clay County Courthouse.
  5. In 2012 some architects had some ideas on how to remodel the old courthouse.  Various ideas were given.
  6. Annette (Sands) Botello from Longmont, Colorado, will give a report at the next meeting (?)
  7. Elk Valley Company 1903 is buying property at Widen (?)
  8. Katelin Hall, our newsletter editor, “Now and Then,” would like information about the murder of Noah Chapman by J.J. Mullins (Chief Policeman) on March 3, 1947.

The next meeting will be on Sept. 8, 2022 at the Clay County Library at 6 p.m.
