The Clay County Landmarks Commission and Historical Society met in the Clay County Library on Wednesday, June 12.

Present were Janet Koch, Laura Williams, Hunter Smith, Jeanine Samples, Jim Miller, Lenora Pettit, Marlene Potasnik, Eloise Boggs, Jerry Stover, and Quincy Potasnik.

The meeting was called to order by President Jerry Stover. Minutes of the May 2019 meeting were read and approved. There was no treasurer’s report for this month.

Presidents Report:

Jerry requested that members give him items they would like to add to the agenda for upcoming meetings.

Committee Reports:

1. The volunteers working in the old courthouse continue their work of sorting, filing, archiving, and scanning. Much has been accomplished by this dedicated group, and the work goes on. Their regular workday is Tuesday, but schedules are flexible and some work independently on other days.
2. Eloise announced that with the issue of the summer Now & Then, the newsletter would reach 30 years of publication. (However, on later reflection and application of simple math, she offers the correction, with apology, that since the first issue was published in the fall of 1990, the newsletter is only 29 years old. Our 30th year will begin with the fall 2019 issue.)

Old Business:

1. The Apple Festival: A motion was made, seconded, and approved that we participate, and that Jerry appoint a committee to make our plans for participation.
2. The Apple Cookbook: A box of several copies of the book “Mrs. Greenway’s Apple Cookbook” were found recently. The late Neva Walling put this book together years ago and it might be considered a collector’s item. A motion was made an approved that we sell these copies of the cookbook. The price is $12 each.
3. Selling issues of “Hickory and Lady Slippers”: Jerry mentioned that he had received a request for a particular issue of “Hickory and Lady Slippers,” which features much information about the Elk River Basin, its people and customs, wildlife, geography, and history. It is an issue that would sell well when he Elk River Rails to Trails Park gets going. A motion was made and approved that the society sell copies of “Hickory and Lady Slippers.” Discussion involved getting in touch with Dustin Bird, who has been reprinting and selling these books for the society.
4. Change of meeting times: The object is to meet at a time that would fit the schedules of working adults and younger persons. A motion was made and approved that the meeting time should be changed, and that a committee be appointed to explore and arrange for changing the time for meetings.

It was decided that an open house be held in the old courthouse on Thursday, June 20, at 7 p.m. Visitors would be given a tour of our offices and a briefing on what we do as a historical society, and what has been done recently and through past years. Everyone is invited to come and see.

New Business:

1. Painting party: Quincy is in charge of this project. Announcements will be made.

Since our meeting date falls on the eve of Independence Day, it was decided that we meet one week later on Wednesday, July 10, at 1 p.m. in the Clay County Library.
