A class next week about Additive Manufacturing (AM), also known as 3-D Printing, will detail how this leading-edge technology is providing new business opportunities. The Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advanced Flexible Manufacturing (RCBI) will deliver an “Introduction to Additive Manufacturing” class on December 10. The day-long workshop is scheduled at the RCBI Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center located at 100 Angus E. Peyton Drive in South Charleston.
The “Introduction to Additive Manufacturing” class focuses on how this manufacturing technology is being credited with revolutionizing the design, development and manufacture of innovative products for the aerospace, defense, medical, consumer and energy markets.
RCBI’s class will help individuals understand how this leading-edge technology, in conjunction with 3-D Printing, is changing the way people do business. It will benefit anyone who is interested in learning more about Additive Manufacturing technology, from manufacturers and entrepreneurs to teachers who want to introduce the technology in the classroom.
3-D Printing involves layering materials to create a three-dimensional product, with virtually unlimited potential, lower cost and more specialization. From production of medical devices to U.S. Department of Defense components to energy industry parts, the innovative technology is rapidly being used by a wide variety of companies. Since RCBI began offering 3-D Printing in 2009, dozens of manufacturers and entrepreneurs have used the technology to bring their ideas to reality and to open new business opportunities.
The class curriculum will include hands-on experience with MakerBot and Fortus 3-D printers. The introductory class will cover:
The generic Additive Manufacturing process;
The benefits of AM to groups and individuals;
The difference between AM and traditional CNC Machining, and
Related technologies.
