This summer Clay Elementary will once again host the Energy Express program for students entering Grades 1-6 in Fall 2019.

Provided through the West Virginia University Extension Service, the program will run from June 24 to July 27.  Fourteen mentors and two community coordinators are needed for the program.

Mentors work with small groups of students (8-10 per group) to reinforce students’ reading skills by developing and implementing print-rich activities.  Community coordinators recruit volunteers to read to students, publicize the program, and involve parents in program activities.

Eligibility requirements are as follows:

Mentors: Must be 18 or older by June 7; be a U.S. citizen; and a Full-time college-student, or college bound graduating high school senior.

Community Coordinator: Must be 18 or older by June 7; a U.S. citizen; and have a high school diploma or equivalency.

Mentors and Community Coordinators earn a $1,850 living allowance and receive a $1,252.91 education award.  All positions must be filled by April 30, 2019.

Interested persons may apply online by visiting the following link:  https://extension.wvu.edu/youth-family/youth-education/energy-express/get-involved .  Applicants with questions may contact Dr. Michelle Samples, program director, at 304-587-4694 or Michael Shamblin, Clay County Extension Agent, at 304-587-4267.
