Community Care of West Virginia’s (CCWV) Clay County school-based provider, Amy Osborne, FNP, and school-based staff, Sondra Neal, MA, and Kara Boogs, along with CCWV Behavioral Health psychiatrist, Kevin Junkins, MD, spent November 16 at Clay County High School (CCHS) for their “Mind Over Matter” event, focused on mental health.
The CCHS Care Team provides medical care in the school-based health center every Wednesday and Friday.
For this special event, CCHS school counselors organized an afternoon for students to learn about healthy alternatives and activities. Each student chose three activity sessions, with one session visiting vendors and healthcare professionals presenting a variety of topics.
The CCHS Care Team shared information about basic health care. Dr. Junkins spoke during one session about suicide awareness and warning signs.
“Our Care Team is here at the school two days a week, so we have the opportunity to get to know the students and staff well,” said Osborne. “This special event allowed us to share some additional information. In addition, Dr. Junkins addressed suicide awareness and provided the students with important information and tools. We’re grateful to the CCHS staff for organizing the event and allowing us to be such active participants.”
Community Care provides school-based healthcare in all Clay County schools. Visiting one of the school-based health centers is just like visiting an “outside” primary care provider’s office. Annual exams for adults and children, immunizations, allergy shots, treatment of chronic and acute conditions for all ages, and management of prescription medications is available during school office hours. Community Care is also a participant in the PEIA CCP program which is available to all PEIA members. With electronic health record interface with both Community Care health centers in Clay and Big Otter, the care students and staff receive in schools is accessible by providers at any Community Care location.
