The Cross

James R. Paxton by James R. Paxton

What does it mean to you?

Some see it symbolic of a religious event that happened long ago.  There are those who look at it as a piece of jewelry.  Still others think of it as a sign of victory meaning that Jesus died there and His death was His defeat.  However the real meaning of the Cross goes much deeper.  Yes Jesus died there but it was more than just His death or a religious activity.

At the Cross Jesus shed His life’s blood for a reason.  It was that blood that was holy and powerful and powerful enough to cleanse away all sin to those who accepted Him.  That blood was innocent blood and it was more than symbolic.  It was the one sacrifice that was acceptable to God  in restoring man to a relationship with God.  It was God’s plan to restore man to a relationship he had with God before Adam and Eve partook of the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden.

At the Cross Jesus took upon Himself all sin and sickness and disease of mankind sparing us and setting us free from the pain and torment that goes along with it.  There the price was paid for our salvation.  However those things are beyond our reach in ourselves.  They are freely given but must come through faith in Jesus and what He did.  We must trust Him and receive those blessing by faith.

The Cross was the fulfillment of many prophesies given by prophets inspired of God throughout the Old Testament.  At the Cross Jesus finished what God the Father had sent Him to do.  Three days later, just like He said, Jesus came forth victorious over hell and death.  The penalty for mankind’s sin was paid in full by the Son of God, Jesus Christ.

The Cross is more than an ornament or piece of jewelry.  It is more that an event in days gone by.  It stands today  reminding us that Jesus died for us a cruel death and purchased for us eternal life if we would believe and accept Him as our Savior.  The blood has lost none of its power or significance.  Religion may find it offensive and the world may trample it under foot but it portrays the love of God and of His Son for a lost and dying world that wallows in hopelessness and without that blood faces eternal damnation.  Thank God for that blood.  Thank Jesus for His obedience.  Eph 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

Col 1:20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
