Independence Road continues to deteriorate, causes travel issues for locals

Locals have been having issues with Independence Road for years now. Holly Nine photo.

Several roads in Clay County haven’t been in very good condition for many years. Just recently, the main highway, Route 16, was paved from Indore straight to the Hartland bridge.

Many residents who live in Adonijah have expressed their concerns about Independence Road. The road has been deteriorating for many years and is in poor shape. Pot holes have been a foot deep, says one frustrated resident. Beginning at the top of the mountain and proceeding further into the holler, the road just gets worse.  Holes have been filled and patched but that doesn’t help matters much. Several people have busted tires repeatedly over the past few years. One resident expressed that if something wasn’t done soon, he would call Channel 8 news!

Concerned parties should call the main Department of Highways office in Charleston at 1-304-558-0444 with any complaints. They make the decisions as to what is done, and where, and direct our local DOH their daily tasks.
