One Nation Under God

James R. Paxton by James R. Paxton

In August, 1984, Ronald Reagan spoke at a prayer breakfast in Dallas, Texas and declared “We poison our society when we remove it’s theological underpinnings…without God, democracy will not and cannot long endure.  If we ever forget that we’re One Nation Under God, then we will be a nation gone under.”

We are fast approaching the edge of that cliff.  Our nation is being swept away by moral decay.  Many would blame Hollywood.  Surely, Hollywood does its very best to further the decay, but to survive, Hollywood is dependent on people to buy its products.  Our government contributes much by not addressing the problem. Our schools make their own contribution but the real guilt lies in two distinct places, namely church and the home.

If parents spent more time raising their children properly  by setting the right example and teaching their children instead of letting the TV pollute their minds things would certainly be different.  I heard a police officer in Charleston say that the problem is “kids raising kids.”  The parents were off doing their own thing and the kids were being influenced and challenged by other kids. Multiply the problem by parents depending on the school teachers to teach the children what they should know and how to relate.

The second place we need to look is the church. The church (which is not the building or the doctrine) but the people.  Even in the book of Ephesians where the Apostle Paul was addressing some problems in the local church;  he had to deal with lying  (Eph. 4:25).  All too often we see professing Christians not telling the truth. All too often they say what sounds good.  In the same chapter Paul addressed anger, evil speaking, forgiveness, vanity, love and ignorance among other things.  Paul also spoke of sin and greed.

Many of our most highly respected Universities that were founded to share the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ no longer do so.  Our government which was founded on Godly principles and the Word of God are trying to turn away from that very foundation as is many judicial authorities.

There is a day coming (soon) when God and only God will judge.  He will judge by His Word and His purpose.  We as a nation are denying His blessings when we turn from Him instead of turning to Him.  The sun may be shining in your life today and everything seems great.  However, there are some mighty storms brewing on the horizon.  Are your prepared?  The only answer is a true and real relationship with Jesus Christ.  Open the Holy Bible and read it for yourself.
