DAR Elk River Chapter members from Nicholas, Calhoun, Lewis. and Braxton counties attended the Central District meeting held at Lambert’s Winery in Weston, WV, on August 26, 2017. Eleven chapters in the district were represented.
The day was full of information for the upcoming year and the presentation of the State Society Regent’s project. Mindy Davis is hoping to obtain enough funding to erect a six foot statue of a Gold Star Mother on the state capitol grounds in Charleston. The sculpture will be done by Jamie Lister who has done many works of art throughout the state. In addition, there will be a Book of Remembrance which will have Gold Star Mothers names and their child listed. This book will be bound and housed at the Archives in Charleston. If interested in donating to the cost of the statue and/or submitting a name(s) for the Remembrance book, one may contact Elk River Chapter Regent, Meg Ashby, in Summersville at 304-872-4709, or Ruth Mooney in Sutton at 304-765-7478.
Saturday’s event had a humorous skit, a delicious meal and chapter awards were distributed. Those from Elk River Chapter who attended included: Calhoun County: Lorraine Bailey, Shirley Ball; Lewis County: Kimberly Frazier; Nicholas County: Meg Ashby, Leigh Ashby, Bonita Bell, Dabney Phillips, Linda Racer; Braxton County: Ruth Mooney, Jill Mooney, Lillie Robinson; and associate member Marilyn “Susie” Rogers from Summersville.
The next large gathering of the WV Daughters will be at the Society’s State Conference, April 20-22, 2018 at Canaan Valley Resort.
