It was Regional time for the CCHS track team. Here they would run, jump, and throw their way into CCHS track history. They would also have to place in the top three of any event to move on to state level competition.
This year, if you have read the paper, you know that the track team has been a force in the track world all season. It was now make-or-break time.
Trevor Armes was attempting to go undefeated in the 400 meter run, a feat that no one else has done. Also, the 4×400 relay team has been in the running in past meets but never in the gold.
Katie Payne was the hope for the girls to make it to the states in the shot put. Armes easily won his match, being the first athlete to go undefeated in the 400 meter run. Payne just missed the cut in the shot put.
Then it was time for the relay team. Bridgeport had one of the fastest teams in the state. Lincoln County is also up there along with Nicholas County. Nate Canfield was the first runner and Panthers were in third place at the first handoff. Reece Nicholas took the handoff, ran and was close to fourth position. He then handed off to David Tanner, and Tanner gained back to a close third. By the time the baton was handed off, Panthers were in fourth place.
Then it was Armes’ turn at the track. Running in fourth place, he quickly gained on third and passed him. In turn three, he fired the afterburners and kicked it past second in the curve and by the time they were on the home stretch, Armes passed first place from Bridgeport and cruised to another Regional championship.
It was an awesome race that left other teams looking over their shoulder, but it was too late, he was already in front of them.
All in all, the team did well. Armes was Regional Champion in the 400 meter and qualified for the 200 meter, and the 400 relay team were Regional Champions.
The state meet will be on Friday and Saturday this week. If you have an opportunity, come down and support the team as they go for gold in the 400 meter and the 4×400 meter relay. The boys placed seventh overall in the meet.
Congratulations to all the boys on their championship.
