Clay County has formed a FIRST Lego League (FLL) team of students in Clay County, WV. FLL is an international robotics competition and this will be the first time that Clay County will be represented in such a tournament. The group is trying to raise at least $500 to get the team started. This will cover the cost of tournament registration, the supplies needed to build their tournament table and their team shirts. If more than $500 is raised, it will be used to buy additional robot supplies and to help with preparation for the upcoming FLL tournament and future tournaments.
The FLL is a NASA sponsored program that emphasizes Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). It also promotes core values such as Integrity, Teamwork and Respect. FLL is designed to teach valuable employment and life skills. At competition, teams will be given a problem that scientists and engineers face today, thin, using LOGO MINDSTORMS technology, team members design and program a robot to present their solutions. Teams will be judged on all parts of their robot challenge as well as their core values.
The Clay County team will be competing in their first tournament this fall. The team leaders have attended a two –day training. They already have their robot and software, and now are ready to begin our journey in the world of STEM with students, say Rebekah Holcomb and Amanda Shelton, team leaders.
