The CCMS Mustangs opened their season Thursday night against the tough Braxton Knights. The meeting between these two teams will always bring out the best in each team, and that fact will always give the fans some good, all-out football action. This meeting was a defensive battle from the start, neither team was able to move the ball offensively with any consistency. The Knights were on the board first scoring six points on the only chance they had during the game. The Mustang defense shut them down from that point on.
The Knights were unable to score the two point conversion and the score stayed 0-6 Knights. Not to be outdone, the Mustang offense started picking apart the Knight defense opening holes in the Knight line big enough for an elephant to get through.
Elijah Payton exploited that chance and after several run attempts broke loose and ran the ball in for a Mustang touchdown. The Mustangs went for the two point conversion handing the ball to Payton, and he scored the two points making the score 8-6 Mustangs going into the half. Once halftime was over, it was all defense on both sides of the ball and there was no holding back. If you like a defensive confrontation, then this would have been a block party. There was no way that the Mustangs would lose this game and their defense made it happen.
Riley Perkins and company proceeded to pick apart the Knight offense and shut them down. The game ended with the Mustangs on top by the score of 8-6 with the Mustangs offense getting the job done. The Mustangs will be back on their home grid this Thursday evening at 6 p.m. They will take on the Summersville Bears. This will be a game that the Mustangs will have to bring their A game defensively and offensively to win. It will be a game you won’t want to miss. If they continue to play well, the Mustangs will hopefully bring back the CWVAC championship trophy back to CCMS.
