The Clay County Board of Education held their bimonthly meeting on Monday, August 22. Audrey Blackwell with Energy Systems Group (ESG) to give an update to the board members about the energy saving project, in which they partnered with Clay County Schools to help save money.
The board members then went into executive session to discuss some private matters. When they returned, they proceeded with the action items listed on the agenda. The resignation of Cathy Craddock as assistant volleyball coach at CCHS was approved. The resignation of Geoff Hamrick as head wrestling coach at CCHS was approved. The resignation of Harvey Church as assistant wrestling coach at CCHS was approved. The resignation of Pamela McKinney as multi-categorical teacher at Clay Elementary and hired as a sub was approved. All of these resignations were effective immediately.
Joanne Exline was approved as substitute (secondary) for the 2016-2017 school year. Pending certification, Angela Cantrell was approved for employment as a substitute teacher. Joe Paxton was approved for employment as assistant superintendent, Mike Mullins’ former position. Chelsie Dorsey was approved as head cheer coach at Clay Middle School. The transfer of Valerie Brown from Secretary III at Clay Middle to Secretary III at the administration office was approved. The board members approved the transfer of five students from Fayette County Schools to attend school in Clay County for the 2016-2017 school year. The board members then approved the transfer of seven students from Kanawha County Schools to attend school in Clay County for the 2016-2017 school year.
A student from Braxton County was approved to attend school in Clay County for the 2016-2017 school year. Then, three students from Calhoun County were approved to attend school in Clay County for the 2016-2017 school year. Lastly, three students from Nicholas County were approved to attend school in Clay County for the 2016-2017 school year.
Bus drivers for Clay County were approved to purchase uniforms in the amount of $175for each driver for the 2016-2017 school year. The amount will be reimbursed by 95 percent.
In discussion items, the members of the board and Joe Paxton discussed the purchase of three new buses from Heritage Bus Sales and the warranty options. This will be brought back as an action item for the next board meeting.
Currently, there are 1,895 students enrolled in Clay County Schools, not counting pre-school students who just started on Wednesday, August 24. After the next count the number is expected to go close to last year’s number of enrolled students of 1,999.
The next scheduled Board of Education meeting is September 12, 2016 at the administrative office.
