Vehicle fatality in the Elk River
On the morning November 20, 2015 Charleston Police Department, along with the Charleston Fire Department, responded to a vehicle crash at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Lee Street. Based on information collected at the scene, the driver lost control of his truck, went over the curb striking a second vehicle before finally coming to rest in the Elk River.
Officers with the Charleston Police Department were first to arrive on scene. Four officers attempted to rescue the driver. Shortly after, Charleston Fire Department arrived with water rescue equipment and were able to extract the driver from his truck.
The driver of the truck, identified at 41 year old Jason Alexander Leadmon of Clendenin, was transported to CAMC-General Division where he later died.
Two officers were taken to St Francis for treatment of hypothermia and have since been released. The occupants of the second vehicle received minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
