Mary Ann Ross, On the morning of Monday, Aug. 9, 2010, with her family by her side, Mary Ann Ross, 74, of Pinch passed peacefully away from our lives.

Mary Ann was originally from Charleston and loved being a town girl. Her later years were spent in Pinch, but she considered herself a Charleston resident all her life. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend to all who knew her, but they also knew she was no-nonsense and spoke her mind. Over the years, she was known by many names, Juicy Ann, Smasher and Lucy Belle, just to name a few, but her favorite name was Mom. Mary Ann raised 10 children with the help of her life mate and husband of 55 years, Dana Ross. Despite the fact that all the children grew up, she never stopped mothering, cooking and giving advice. She was at her best whenever a crisis came, ready to give orders, make plans and organize the family as she saw fit. Mom would want it said that those who knew her knew that she was honest and to the point, sometimes painfully so. She did not shirk from her responsibility of instilling morals and doling punishment as necessary in order that her children did what was right.

She was raised in the Methodist Church and took part in various civic organizations when she could spare the time. She loved to cook and crochet, gamble and grumble. We will all miss these things and so much more.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Dana Ross of Pinch; children, Mary Ellen (Mickey) Costen of Smith Mountain Lake, Va., Helen Drennen (Don Bird) of Pinch; D.J. (Debbie) of Pinch, Gary (Kathy) of Pinch, Larry (Janet) of Dublin, Va., Mark (Tammy) of Duck, Marshall (Vicki) of Pinch, Greg (Juanita) of Pinch and Elizabeth Ann (Richard) Given of Big Chimney; sisters, Betty Vanatter of Ripley and Nancy (Larry) Phillips of Charleston; and brother, Sammy Gary Mullins of Cicerone. She was grandmother to 23 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The family gives a special thank you to Jerri Lynn Maynard for caregiving, friendship and companionship over the last year. Mom loved Jerri as one of her own and looked forward to her daily visits and assistance.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Mary Mullins; daughter, Susan Schoolcraft; son-in-law, Steve Schoolcraft; grandchildren, Joseph, Melanie and Jennifer Schoolcraft; sister, Nancy Sue Rucker; and great-grandfather, James Seth “Poppy” Savage.

There will be a memorial service intended to celebrate her life at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, at the family home, 189 Quick Road, Elkview. Anyone who knew her and has a story to tell should bring a chair and a smile and help us in remembering the unique, irreverent, larger-than-life woman we will carry in our hearts forever.
