7-2-09 Dobbins Resigns as Principal at Clay County High School.
Phillip Dobbins has resigned as principal of Clay County High School and will return to the classroom teaching Social Studies at the school. Dobbins wants to spend more time with his family and have summers off.
The principal job will be posted at the Board of Education Office to accept applications.
7-2-09 VFD Chief Hit, Killed while riding ATV
The Chief of the Birch River Volunteer Fire Department in Nicholas County was killed in an ATV accident about 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24, 2009, according to a statement from the department.
Robert Cottrill, 46, was riding an ATV when he was struck by a vehicle according to the department. He had been a member of the department since 1981, Cottrill was traveling west on Widen-Dille Road in Birch River when he was struck by a 2000 Dodge Durango stolen from Braxton County, according to the Nicholas County Sheriff’s Department. Both the driver and passenger of the vehicle initially fled the scent, according to police.
The driver Jerry Shannon from Mill Creek Road in Birch River, turned himself in to police in Braxton county on Thursday, June 25, 2009, said Nicholas County Sheriff Wetzel Bennett. He is charged in Braxton County with leaving the scene of an accident causing death, Bennett said.
The passenger, Christopher Watson Summer from Stoney Creek in Braxton County, has been charged with robbery of the vehicle and maliciously wounding the owner, Bennett said.
6-25-09 4-H Camp Gets Underway
The kids were gathering at the Clay County Courthouse, suitcases in hand, waiting to board buses for the 2009 Clay County 4-H Camp to be held at Camp Sheppard, Gandeeville, Roane County. One Hundred Sixteen kids registered for camp this year, which gets underway (today) Monday, June 22, 2009 and runs through Friday, June 26, 2009, with the camp concluding Friday night with the council circle.
Karen Nicholas is the Camp Director and Mike Shamblin is the 4-H Exten-sion Agent. The theme for camp this year is The Country Fair. Classes that will be offered to the campers will be candle making, shooting classes and cooking classes, just to name a few. Campers will also have a pool party on Wednesday night.

First sign up will be June 20 at Lizemore School
Second sign up will be June 26 at Bradley Field from 9:00 - 12:00
Third sign up will be July 18 in front of the High School from 9:00 - 12:00
Please remember that your child will need to have a sports physical and we need a copy of your childs birth certificate. Fee's for particapation for the 2009 season are $35.00 for first child and $20.00 for each additional child.
6-18-09 Library Closed
Just wanted everyone to know that the Library will be closing, June 18, 2009 @ 4:30 p.m. due to the extreme heat. The temperature in the library is 90 degrees and there is no air circulating at all. The air conditioning unit is out. We are waiting on a replacement.

6-18-09 Clay County FFA Chapter competes in Springfield, Missouri Contest
Students from the Clay County FFA Chapter recently traveled to Springfield, Missouri to take part in the Mid America Grassland Contest.
Students identify grasses and forbs, calculate feed needs of cattle in various grazing situations, and recommend practices to increase production of grazing systems. Students also balance grazing with wildlife adaptation by recommending practices that will promote grazing and wildlife habitat.
Logan Ramsey, Michael Taylor, Catherine Nottingham and Hillary Tinney placed 3rd as a team in the national event with a score of 1057. Only 11 points separated them from the first place team. Logan Ramsey also place 5th as an individual. Megan Prater, Sara McCune and Kelsey Flinn place 5th as a team. 24 teams from Missouri, Arkansas, Ohio and West Virginia competed in the event.

6-11-09 Doctor Jamie Auction
A public auction was held on June 2, 2009, at the West Virginia Department of Highways parking lot. The auction started at 11:00 a.m.
Doctor Shahrooz S. Jamie was the name in the air. Up for auction was Doc Jamie’s 2004 Porsche Boxter and his 2006 Suzuki XL-7 SUV.
Interested spectators and buyers came from all around. Locals stopped by to watch the auction, and buyers came as far as from Texas. In the end, winning bidder was Doc Jamie himself, with a bid of $50,000.00 for both vehicles.
6-11-09 Wreck at Carol's Restaurant
There was a wreck June 4, 2009 at the intersection at Carol’s Restaurant. A Chevy truck, driven by a Smithers, WV man, traveling on Route 4 to Clay was hit by a Clay Co. Woman driving a car coming off of Route 36. The truck was pushed off the road and into a parked Ford Pickup. The driver of the car was taken by ambulance. The two men in the Chevy Truck had minor injuries and were released at the scene.
